Exhibit, 'Scapes: the International Landscape
Exhibit
|
 |
"Leftovers"
by Fred Markham. Best in Show for the
2008 'Scapes exhibit.
|
Our
landscape, the world around us, has been
rendered by artists since the beginning of time.
Landscape art depicts scenery out-of-doors such
as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and
forests. Sky is almost always included in the
view, and weather usually is an element of the
composition. Traditionally, landscape art
depicts the surface of the earth, but there are
other sorts of landscapes including seascapes,
cityscapes, and skyscapes.
Members may be inspired by the emotion-infused
works of painters including Alfred Bierstadt,
Thomas Moran, Marsden Hartley, and Winslow Homer
or the abstracted, intense color of contemporary
artists such as Wolf Kahn, (www.wolfkahn.com)
Dan McCarthy, and Gregory Kondos (www.gregorykondos.com).
Members may also look to our own Art League
instructors, such as Gwen Bragg, Peter Ulrich,
and Steve Fleming. Click here
to view
some example of their work.
Juror
Nora M. Heimann, is associate professor
of art history and the Chair of the Art
Department at The Catholic University of
America. Her publications include a book, Joan
of Arc in French Art and Culture (1700-1855):
From Satire to Sanctity (Ashgate, 2005),
an article, a catalog essay, and a book chapter
on Joan of Arc's iconographic fortunes through
time on both sides of the Atlantic. She has
curated exhibitions on contemporary art and rare
book illustration. Her special interest is in
the relationship between art, politics, gender,
identity, and religion. She holds an A.B. with
honors from Harvard University; an M.A. from
Williams College; and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from
the Graduate Center of the City University of
New York.

Late
Summer Workshops
The summer has been speeding along, however
there is still time to enroll in an August
Workshop or Art Camp. For workshops click here.
For camps and Teen workshops click here.
Fall Registration is Here!
Fall Term is nearly here (it begins September
21, 2009). Registration opens promptly
at 9:30 am, Monday, August 10, 2009! The
newly redesigned school catalog is out and
should be arriving in your mailbox shortly.
to download and view the color version of the
catalog, including the greatly expanded Fiber
section. Please spread the word about our
wonderful classes and drop off copies of our
catalog at any place that might display them.
Still
Life Donations and Film SLR Cameras Sought
The school's still-life stores (i.e.: cloths,
vases, bric-a-brac and priceless dustables) have
reached an all-time low. We hope those who have
delayed their spring cleaning will consider
donating to this worthy cause. Remember: the
more interesting the still life, the more
interesting the painting.
If anyone has gone to totally digital
photography and has a 35mm camera laying around
that still works, consider donating it to the
school. We offer Teen Photo workshops that
include some darkroom work. It has become more
difficult for students to find working film
cameras to use.

"Taking
Form," A Three-Dimensional Exhibit
|
 |
| "Form"
by Kreshnik Xhiku |
"Taking
Form," is an exhibit of
three-dimensional sculptures, forms, structures,
and creations juried by Rebecca Cross that will
be featured in The Art League gallery in August.
"Taking Form" was
originally intended for our off-site exhibit,
Washington Square, but the venue was forced to
cancel all of their exhibits for the year.
The sculptural work Cross selected spans a
variety of media and styles. Traditional and
contemporary figurative work, thought provoking
narrative work, and structural works are
represented. "Taking Form" will
be featured in The Art League gallery
concurrently with the annual 'Scapes:
International Landscape Exhibit, August
5 - September 7, 2009.
Cross selected "Form" by Kreshnik
Xhiku as the Best in Show and winner of the
Monkeith Said Memorial Award. Honorable mentions
were given to Elissa Farrow-Savos for
"Rooted," Julia Bloom for
"Untitled #4," and Tony diFrancesco
for "Civilization." Awards will be
presented during the Opening Reception on
Thursday, August 13 at 7:30 pm.

Juror's Dialogue and Awards
|
 |
"Thirteen,"
by Wendy Donahoe
|
Juror's
Dialogue with Catriona Fraser
“Black and white work is dramatic in nature.
Some media lend themselves to being black and
white – printmaking, pen and ink, and
photography for example. As a black and white
photographer, I see the world in black and
white..... Whenever I jury a show, I’m looking
for visual impact. A good work of art needs to
be appealing and intriguing to look at as well
as technically well done. It needs to capture
and hold my interest, and ultimately provoke an
emotional response....." Click here
to read the full article.
Awards
The Urquhart Award: Wendy Donahoe
Honorable Mention: Lesa Cook, Peggy Fleming,
Yolanda Frederikse, Christine Lashley, James
McGivney, Tess Olson, Teresa Oaxaca, Songmi
Park, Edward Reed, Jacqueline Saunders, Todd
Smith.

ArtFest
Replaces Fall Used Book and Ceramics Seconds
Sale in 2009
|
|
The
Art League will not be holding our annual Fall
Used Book and Ceramics Seconds sale. After a
careful assessment of our current resources
and program schedule, we realized that we
would be unable to hold the sale this year.
Instead, we will be focusing our energies and
resources on ArtFest!
Building on the popularity and success of the
first ArtFest in December 2008, we'll be
holding this community open house in
conjunction with our annual holiday ceramics
sale again this year on December 4, 2009. More
information about this celebration of our
school's 3-D programs to come this fall!
