There is currently one full-time, fully experienced and fully equipped photographer, other photographers are on call. We are specialists in the photojournalistic approach.
Nina Tisara began her photographic career in 1981 as a part-time photojournalist and became known for her sensitive portrayal of Alexandria people and places. She opened Tisara Photography in 1985 and was soon joined by her son, Steven Halperson and daughter, Lynn Mills.
Tisara served on the Board of Directors of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce for six years and was a founding member of KSMET, the association of businesses in the King Street Metro area. She is the recipient of the 1997 Friend of Small Business and Outstanding Board Member awards from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce; the 1994 Alex Award from the Alexandria Arts Forum for her work as an artist; the 1991 Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Alex Award for contributions to the arts; the 1989 Woman to Woman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Affairs and the Arts from the Alexandria Commission on the Status of Women; and a 1985 grant from the Alexandria Commission on the Arts to create a photographic essay on worship in Alexandria. She was accepted by jury into the Torpedo Factory Art Center in 1985 and co-founded Factory Photo-works cooperative gallery.
Steven Halperson has been with Tisara Photography for more than twenty five years. Currently he photographs a majority of the portraits, weddings and special events. He has mounted solo photo exhibitions and won awards for his work.
Steven specializes in images of the area at dusk and can often be seen carrying his tripod around town in search of the definitive image of Alexandria. He is continually developing the creative aspects of his work and experimenting with various forms of expression copper etching and circuit boards, as well as photography.
